Chesterfield, VA (1140wrva.com) –   Virginia State Police have named their helipad at their state headquarters in honor of Trooper-pilot Berke Bates.  Bates was killed when his helicopter crashed during the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville last August.  Lt. Jay Cullen was also on board.  State Police recently named their aviation hanger for Cullen.

Former Governor Terry McAuliffe was among the speakers.  Bates guarded McAuliffe as a member of the Executive Protection Unit.  McAuliffe was also on his way to Charlottesville at the time of the crash.

Bates' wife Amanda told those in attendance that her husband would have been honored, but that he would have added that he was just doing his job.  State Police awarded the Bates' family with silver aviation wings.  Bates had been aiming towards earning the wings when he was killed.
