April 13, 2018 - 9:46 am

Henrico, Va. (1140wrva.com)  A couple charged with incest in Henrico are dead in an apparent murder-suicide that spanned three states and claimed four lives. The mother of 42 year-old Steven Pladl started the investigation Thursday when she called 911 to ask police to check on the welfare of 7 month-old Bennett Pladl, who Steven had picked up from her home in Cary, North Carolina. He was the father of the boy.  The child was found dead in a residence the pair once shared in Knightdale, North Carolina.

According to the 911 call, Steven called his mother just before killing himself in his mini-van in Dover, New York - just miles from where he confessed to killing 20 year-old Katie and her 56 year-old adoptive father in their pick-up truck in New Milford, Connnecticut. Katie was staying with her adoptive parents in New York state ahead of her next court date in Henrico.

The apparent motive according to Steven's mother is that Katie called Steven the night before and broke up with him. The mother says she did not suspect anything and that Steven told her he was going to take the couple's son to Katie in New York state.

Katie moved in with Steven and his wife in their Henrico home in August 2016. The couple had two childen. The wife moved out three months later after learning Katie was pregnant by Steven, and the children had been told to call Katie their stepmom.
