Richmond, VA (1140wrva.com) – Virginians are being asked to practice for a tornado in a few weeks.  The Statewide Tornado drill is planned for Tuesday, March 12th, at 9:45am.

The drill allows people to train for what they would do if a tornado were to hit their location.  Virginia may not be Kansas or Missouri, but 10 people have been killed by Virginia twisters just in the past two years.  One even hit Mechanicsville and Petersburg last summer.

In the event of a tornado, VDEM Spokeswoman Laura Southard says you should go to the lowest floor of the building you are in.  You should also go to the interior of that floor, staying away from windows.  You should also have a flashlight and water in case power is lost.
