ABC Had Prohibition In Attempt To Stop Underage Drinking
Richmond, VA (1140wrva.com) – The newspapers at UVA and Virginia Tech have had a new source of advertising revenue opened up to them. The Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled Virginia cannot ban the papers from accepting alcohol advertisements. The ABC had the prohibition as a way to stop underage drinking.
The Court pointed out the majority of the readers of both papers are older than 21, and therefore, can legally drink. The newspapers, says ACLU Legal Director Rebecca Glenberg, are at a competitive disadvantage if they can't accept the ad revenue.
A lower court also ruled against the ban.
