State Cannot Release Unemployment Data Because Feds Can't Give It To Them...
Richmond, VA (1140wrva.com) – The Federal Government shutdown isn't just keeping people from working, it is also keeping the State from finding out how many people aren't working. The Virginia Employment Commission says it cannot release local unemployment figures because no one is working at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
VEC Chief Economist Ann Lang says this could impact future employment reports as well, depending on how long the federal shutdown lasts. She says the VEC works with the Feds to develop the numbers, but they rely on BLS Methodology.
