The Henrico County School Board has voted to require students to have at least a 2.0 GPA to participate in high school sports. The new rule will be phased in over 2 years.
The current requirement is only to be enrolled in 5 classes and to have passed 5 classes the previous semester.
Administrators say about 11 percent of current participants do not have at least a 2.0. That's about 1600 student-athletes.
This is a complex issue. Some applaud the emphasis on academic standards while others fear the affected kid will fall through the crack without the structure of their sports team.
I got into this with Bill and Shelly this morning on Lite 98. Here is the audio.
